NIGB Field Trial – Clarkefield – 11th July 2021

An excellent field of 11 dogs, 5 GSP’s, 4 pointers, an Epagneul Breton, and a visual. It was pleasing to see so many spectators and helpers in attendance.

The day, although cold, was excellent for field work with a good breeze all day. The paddock was a great size with plenty of cover. The height of the cover was a little troublesome as it was hard for spectators to see some of the excellent dog work. In WGAA rules dogs are required to back if there is an opportunity to do so and despite the cover making it difficult we did have 3 superb backs on the day.

Sam & Rick were responsible for planting the released game and WGAA thanks them for their untiring efforts all day.

This is our second NIGB field trial and WGAA sees a real future for this type of trial. We are still in the early stages of fine tuning this format but we are making huge strides and we look forward to future events.

The judge on the day was Michael Zandona who is a very experienced trialler and judge. Michael spent much of his time helping handlers who are relatively new to field trails and gave them excellent summing up of how all dogs performed after the first round and at the conclusion of the trial.

The trial manage was our training officer, Kevin Phelps who always goes above and beyond what can be expected and we owe him big time!

Thanks also to the Beesley clan for making the property available for another WGAA event.

Winner: Wayne Phelps’ Epagneul Breton WINDKAEL AUSTRALIS, Boss with 5 finds and 2 excellent retrieves.

Runner up: Steve Lucks’ GSP FINEPOINT HI FLEX, Meg with 3 finds and 1 retrieve.

Our next NIGB trial is on the 12th of September 2021.

ANZAC Day – Pointer & Setter Trial (open to all pointing breeds) – 25th April 2021

ANZAC Day Field Trial Report

Great Paddock, reasonable weather, plenty of birds, but boy, were they difficult to find. Young birds were probably the reason for the fact that despite the 30+ birds that were seen, only a handful were pointed and only 2 were bagged.  The second round produced bird after bird – mainly by the gallery.

In the end the judge, Michael Zandona did the only reasonable thing possible by declaring a no result.

Training Day – Riddles Creek – 28th February 2021

Sunday 28th February WGAA held its first training day of the year.

WGAA is back on track (again) thanks to the lifting of more Covid 19 restrictions. It was great to see so many members making the best of perfect weather conditions.

Training Officer, Kevin Phelps got the action underway together with all committee members pitching in. The weather was ideal for water retrieves, especially for beginner dogs.

The club welcomes all those new members who signed up on the day and wishes them every success in training their gundogs.

Raffle tickets were snapped up with great alacrity and we are well on the way to covering the cost of our new bird release cages. We will continue selling tickets at our March and April training days and the winner will be drawn at the April training day.

WGAA Vic has a full calendar lined up for 2021, so jump on for the ride and let’s leave 2020 well behind.
